Back Behind the Lens: Choosing the Right Wedding Photographer

Returning to what I love most

After taking a meaningful break from wedding photography—due Covid and then the joyful and life changing arrival of my son—I’m genuinely thrilled to return to what I love most: capturing the joyous, heartfelt moments that make weddings so incredibly special.

This time away has deepened my appreciation for the true significance of each celebration. It has also reignited my passion for storytelling through beautiful, timeless imagery—images that you and your loved ones will cherish for a lifetime.

As I step back behind the lens, I thought I’d share a few thoughts on what to look for when choosing your wedding photographer.

What to look for in a Wedding Photographer

Your wedding photographer should be so much more than someone with a camera. On your big day, they will be by your side more than almost anyone else—so it's essential that they bring more than technical skill.

Look for someone who is calm and has a reassuring presence—someone who blends into the background when needed, yet is always ready to capture the meaningful, spontaneous moments. A good photographer is a keen observer of detail, emotion, and light—but just as importantly, they should be someone you feel completely at ease with.

Connection is key

When choosing your photographer, it’s important to not only look at their portfolio but to actually meet them in person beforehand. This initial meeting is your opportunity to get a sense of their personality, approach, and how they might fit into your day.

I always love meeting couples for a relaxed coffee and a chat—no pressure to book—just a chance to connect, hear about your plans, and answer any questions you may have. It’s also a chance for you to see if I am the right fit for your celebration.

Get comfortable in front of the camera

Let’s be honest—most of us aren’t entirely comfortable being photographed (even if we enjoy a good selfie!). That’s why I often recommend an engagement or pre-wedding shoot.

These sessions are a fantastic way to ease into the experience of being in front of the camera. You will get a feel for how I work, and we’ll have a chance to get to know each other better. It builds trust and comfort, which always shows in the final images—and makes a big difference on your wedding day.

Final thoughts

Your wedding day is one of the most personal and emotional days of your life. Your photographer should be someone who not only captures the moments you expect, but also the ones you didn’t even realize were happening.

If you’re looking for someone who will approach your day with care, creativity, and genuine joy—I would love to hear from you.
